Happy New Year

Happy New Year to all and God Bless everyone.

Here is a great way to celebrate the year Nobunaga style. In 1574, Nobunaga held a his own way to celebrate the new year. He displayed the skulls of Asakura Yoshikage, Azai Nagamasa, and Azai Hisamasa to his Horse Guards at Gifu Castle.

The skulls were lacquered in gold and must have been an awesome party. It was his Horse Guards from Nobunaga's power base Owari and to some degree Mino who were able to enjoy the event. One of the episodes of Toshiie to Matsu covered the party and it was almost accurate in my opinion. It did fill in the gaps on what might have happen on that glorious New Year's Day in Gifu.

The passage above is from Ota Gyuichi's Shincho-Ko ki, Book 7, Chapter 1. Lamers did note this event in his book Japonius Tyrannus, p. 32.

2010 will be a great year for the Sengoku fan. You have celebrations in Gifu, the 450th anniversary of the Battle of Okehazama, and Aichi Prefecture celebrating its Aichi warriors.

God Bless everyone and have a happy new year!
